Dear Road Church Friends,
I pray this letter finds you well and in good spirits.
My spirit has certainly been lifted by the beautiful fall colors all around us and by the summer like weather we have been enjoying these past few weeks. I hope you have been able to get outside for a walk or drive to take it in. The night sky has also been beautiful. There was a full moon on October 1st and there will be another on October 31st. That phenomenon is known as a “Blue Moon” because it only happens every few years. Nature is always on display for our enjoyment. All we have to do is look around or look up. It’s a good way to break the gloomy spell of the pandemic or the latest news cycle.
That thought brings me to the theme of my Sunday message. Its title is from Luke 21:28 “Stand Up, Look Up.” It comes from a word of Jesus, “People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in a cloud’ with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and look up, because your redemption is drawing near.” Luke 21:26-28.
This year of fires, floods, blue moons and pandemic is one we will long remember. Jesus addressed times like these when people are filled with fear and foreboding about what has befallen the world. Earlier generations have faced similar challenges or worse. But Jesus tells us not to worry, even if the earth beneath our feet seems to be shaking and the sky above seems to be falling. He tells us to, “stand up, throw your head back, stretch out your arms, look up, and face what’s coming. Don’t be afraid, because your redemption is drawing near.” It’s like we’re on a fast moving rollercoaster ride strapped in our seat. And your friend beside you says, “don’t be afraid. Let go of the bar. Raise your hands. Open your eyes. Enjoy the ride.” You’ll be fine.”
“Perfect love casts out fear” 1 John 4:18
Blessings to all,
